Eligibility for District Support

Referral for the District STLA is for primary students with severe learning difficulties
who require additional instructional support beyond the resources of the school.
Students referred will have a significant discrepancy between their literacy, language
and/or numeracy achievement and their expected achievements in terms of age and ability.

Before seeking access to District STLA support, Principals will ensure
that the full range of school resources has been utilised.

Prior to referral a student will have received:

  • An individual learning program within his/her own classroom for two terms

  • Reading Recovery (if applicable) for up to 2 terms followed by intensive intervention
from the school’s STLA (if the school has an allocation) for two terms.

  • Intensive intervention provided by other support personnel within the school ( usually for 2 terms)


Prior to referral schools will need to ensure that:

· Advice has been provided by the school counsellor to the school’s Learning Support Team
on factors relevant to the student’s learning needs.

· Parent/caregiver has been consulted and is in agreement with the proposed action.

The Assistant Principal of Learning Assistance (APLA) should also be consulted.
